چکیده

We investigate the interactions of two distinct loss recovery mechanisms employed by TCP and IS-707, a partial error recovery Radio Link Protocol (RLP), during a long-time, low-speed TCP connection over a radio channel with correlated losses. In such a scenario not only the unrecovered frame losses, but also the slow RLP frame loss recovery mechanism trigger the TCP congestion avoidance, resulting in very poor system performance in high frame error regime. A run-time coordination of the RLP and TCP can mitigate this problem. An improvement of IS-707 RLP consisting of the addition of a limited number of probing frames after a TCP segment transmission is proposed to speed up frame loss recovery. That modification alone can very significantly improve TCP throughput in the high frame loss regime with weak correlations, but cannot equally well cope with the effects of consecutive TCP packet losses. Further improvement of TCP throughput in the latter case might be obtained by reducing the maximum TCP retransmission timeout RTOmax, to the extent that it keeps the network stable. The proposed TCP–RLP coordination mechanisms can be supported by interprotocol signaling.

Performance of TCP/RLP protocol stack on correlated fading DS-CDMA wireless links

Qualcomm, Inc. 6455 Lusk Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92121-2779, U.S.A. e-mail: fachockal,[email protected] Abstract— In this paper, we present the throughput performance of Transport Control Protocol/Radio Link Protocol (TCP/RLP) stack on correlated fading direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) wireless links. It is shown that, because of significant burstiness in RLP frame erro...

TCP over IS-707

Mobile wireless Internet access services face a problem of mitigating the time-varying, correlated frame losses in fading radio channels. The losses may be compounded by detrimental interactions between separate error recovery mechanisms in the link and transport protocol layers. In this work we investigate by simulations the performance of TCP Reno over IS-707, a radio link protocol standard f...

Intraprotocol fairness and interprotocol friendliness of TFRC congestion control algorithm - Electronics Letters

The TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) algorithm has been proposed for supporting applications such as video streaming or telephony over the Internet, where a relative smooth sending rate is of importance. The fairness and friendliness of TFRC over scenarios with multiple congested routers is evaluated. Results obtained using the ns-2 simulator show that while TFRC improves network utilisation wi...

Standards: TCP in a Wireless World

M obile wireless is one of the more challenging environments for the Internet protocols, and for TCP in particular. One approach to supporting the wireless environment is the so-called “walled garden.” Here the transport protocol used within the mobile wireless environment is not TCP, but is instead a transport protocol that has been specifically adapted to mobile wireless. In this model, Inter...

TCP Performance Issues over Wireless Links

This article discusses the problems arising when the TCP/IP protocol suite is used to provide Internet connectivity over existing and emerging wireless links. Due to the strong drive towards wireless Internet access through mobile terminals, these problems must be carefully studied in order to build improved systems. We review wireless link characteristics using Wireless LANs and Cellular Commu...
